A US district court in Texas has ordered Dish Network Corporation and their sister company EchoStar Corporation to pay TiVo Inc approximately $200 million in a lingering patent dispute.

The amount includes $110 Million in compensation and another $90 Million in sanctions and Court costs.  It all started back in 2004 when TiVo first filed suit against EchoStar (formerly the parent company of Dish Network) alleging there had been a violation of TiVo’s patent rights on its Digital Video Recorder. EchoStar’s response was that it too had created a Digital Video Recorder in good faith and had no intention of copying TiVo’s technology.
